{encouragement. be one.} Erin Phillips Photography, Slidell LA family photographer

A few weeks back when I was filling out my office to-do sheet for the week, I noticed at the bottom it had a space for “blogger to encourage”. I quickly wrote 3 names of photographers that I wanted to leave small notes to, and let them know that I was thinking of them or loving their latest work, some sort of note of thoughtfulness/encouragement. I’ve completely loved doing this and have continued to fit it into my office time. Little words can be BIG.

I think in such an industry as photography, it’s easy (or can be) to get caught up in what everyone else is doing. What camera they are shooting with, what lenses they are using, what are their editing techniques, compare compare, compete compete. I think we could all use a little less competing, and a little more encouraging.

Now, don’t get me wrong.. I love some good competition. I played volleyball for a good 7 years through school! But this is different.. this isn’t the fun, good for your soul kind of competition. Let’s face it. We are unique. We have different styles, likes, dislikes, creativity.. but we are photographers, small business owners, mothers, daughters, friends.  So while I think, yes, let’s be the BEST we can be and keep trying, creating, thinking outside the box.. keep doing all of those things. But also, lets consider the others who are out there working hard like we are, and busting their behind for the sake of capturing memories for other people, and let’s encourage them to keep it up! Because those of us who are TRULY passionate about our work will spread that passion to others.

Let’s spread some encouragement, shall we?

  • Oona (Oona Lee) - Love this! As a newbie it has been a bit disconcerting to see the negative side of competition in this industry. I have not yet really discovered my own style yet. There are many I love, each more different than the last. I think that all artists have something valuable to share. No need to hurt each other on this journey. I love the idea of being an encouragement, not a critic. Thanks for sharing Erin!ReplyCancel
